Singing
I was lucky enough to study with Winifred Busfield, formerly Head of Singing at the RSAMD (now Royal Conservatoire of Scotland).
She taught me how to breathe properly ie using the diaphragm and intercostal muscles, and in turn I pass this on to my students, with amazing results. I also teach vocal exercises tailored to suit the individual students, from the professional singer doing an audition or looking for a refresher to the nervous beginner. Learning to breathe the right way helps general health too, and I spend the first 10 minutes of every lesson on breathing and relaxation.
I deliver high quality tuition to students in all styles, ages (no under fives at present), whether you have an audition, an exam, or are in a band and want to improve your vocal delivery. Students find they achieve great results from the very first lesson, including increased confidence in their abilities and in themselves.
Piano / Keyboard
I welcome students from Grade 1 onwards, whether sitting exams, competitions, or working towards auditions or performances – with appropriate preparation time please! Contact me to discuss. I teach from the ABRSM Syllabus (Classical/Jazz), Rockschool, and Trinity Rock & Pop. I also teach students learning for their own enjoyment, in which case feel free to bring your own music but please be aware that there will be an expectation to practise at least 4 times per week to make the lessons worthwhile.
Having a piano or keyboard (and short nails!) to practise on is essential as is having some time each day to practise and assimilate what’s been learned at the last lesson. It’s more fun that way!
Theory
I welcome theory students, either in tandem with their Singing or Piano lessons, or as a stand alone lesson. I can teach from Grade 2 to Grade 8 theory and can help students with theory exams. It’s easier than you think! Not essential for singing but music reading opens up a whole world of repertoire for piano students.
VocaYoga
My classes are currently held approximately once a month, in either the Multipurpose Room (with a lovely view of a wild flower garden) or the Education Suite at the Prince & Princess of Wales Hospice, 20 Dumbreck Rd, Bellahouston, Glasgow G41 5BW. You can follow me here at eventbrite.com for upcoming classes. The next classes are planned for 22 September 2024 and then 7 December 2024 (click on the dates for event details).
In the summer months, I offer outdoor classes in the Scottish Poetry Rose Garden, these are shorter and last an hour.
I also offer individual Vocayoga sessions (and Pamper Packages – see FAQ for details), for women and I also teach Pregnancy and Postnatal Yoga. Contact me direct to book.
